My brother-in-law specialized in extra-wide, extra-long, and extra-high loads his whole career. This is one of the trailers. This particular one has 19 TOTAL axles and therefore 74 tires on the ground!
He accumulated lots of stories over the years including…
–Hauling a 100-foot “pipe,” 12-feet in diameter, THROUGH the neighborhoods in the city of Boston to the “Big Dig” (located downtown). The electric company had crews ahead of him removing any electrical wires and another crew behind him putting them back up.
–Hauling a 140-foot pipe to a mine in West Virginia. The road had such tight curves that a wrecker accompanied them. When he would go around a curve, the load was so long that the rear wheels on the trailer would drop off the pavement. They would use the wrecker to lift the rear of the trailer back on the pavement and off they would go to the next curve.
–In some states, his permit would only allow him to drive from 0900-1100 and 1300-1500 each day and NO driving on the weekend.
–He would often haul wind-turbine nacelles (A nacelle is the housing containing all of the generating components in a wind turbine). A nacelle on an industrial wind turbine can exceed 50 tons!
