Long Sunny Days and Short Sunny Nights

If you are going to be in Alaska around June 21st, you MAY need to make some “blackout curtains” for your RV depending on how well your RV can be closed up to block out bright light. You will have sunshine at 10:30 PM and again about 3:30 AM. This bright sun will light up an RV (and your bedroom) coming in along the sides of some shades, the skylight over the shower, and may even come in around the edges of your slides. It can really turn bright before you are finished sleeping or even when trying to go to sleep!

We used some dark blue polar fleece to create temporary “curtains” and used the spring-loaded curtain rods to hang them each night—not for looks but just to block the bright sunlight. They don’t stay up during the day so looks are not important but the light blockage is. Some window-mounted shades in your RV may do a pretty good job but won’t eliminate all the light leaks.

Here we are in Palmer, Alaska at 10:30 PM…
1030 at night
