Although we use our GPS extensively, there is one “unusual” atlas that we carry and is helpful.
The Motor Carrier’s Atlas… is a type of road atlas specifically designed for “Motor Carriers” (truckers). This atlas contains some really useful information related to driving big rigs and applies to all states and provinces. The atlas will help RVers since it includes:
- Phone numbers and websites to call for road conditions—both construction and weather-related road conditions
- Low clearance locations
- Legal size/weight limits for Interstate (federal) routes and states/provinces
- Police phone numbers
- Emergency phone numbers
- Area codes.
The Motor Carrier’s road atlas is available at truck stops and mapping companies. Many RVers get a year-old edition from a trucker since they typically update theirs annually to have the most current information.
Note that the maps in the Motor Carrier’s atlas are not great for RVers. The state maps have a fat, dense line printed over the truck routes and this blocks some of the information. Still, it works for truckers.
I recommend you get the Motor Carrier’s road atlas for the really helpful information in it to supplement your GPS especially if you have a really tall RV!
