We pulled into a campground today and had a reservation to stay three nights. I had talked with the guy when I called for a reservation and told him that I needed a site that was open to the southern sky—for my satellite dishes. I have two on top of my coach. One is for DirecTV and the other is Internet. We NEVER watch a show live and always record them so cable TV is useless to us. I can get Internet anywhere in North America and DO NOT depend on cell phone coverage or some local WiFi. I need access everywhere to run my website. I mention this because an open visible-southern-sky site is important to us—especially if we are going to be parked there a few days.
We arrived just as they were closing the office and were apparently in such a rush to get out of there so they told me they would park me and I could register the next day. That’s fine.
This was an old, tight, military campground (I have that privilege) with lots of pine trees and they were full of RVs. I actually got the last space. I asked the guy about the open sky and he essentially told me that I had the last space and to take it or leave it, period.
We decided to “test” the site for at least one night (we could always leave since we had not registered) and see if we could lock on with our satellite dishes. Luckily, we did.
But I’m jumping ahead here. Back to parking…
They told me they would park me because the sites were small, short, and tight. They were definitely small and short and tight! When I got to our site, there were FIVE (5) guys waiting to park me. It was a pull-thru site but my coach maxed out the length so they wanted me in somewhat of an exact position to not block the driving lanes in front and back of our coach.
Note that my wife ALWAYS guides me into our site. I trust her completely, we have practiced, and use the hand signals shown in the video on this website. She is excellent at judging the turns and how to manipulate our coach to fit. BUT… these five guys wouldn’t have anything to do with her because they were there to get it done and go home!!!
So, I had five guys signaling me (ALL AT ONCE) on how to park my coach. One in the front was telling me which way to turn my steer tires, the other in front was telling me which way to turn my steering wheel, one in back was pointing which way the rear of the coach should go, another in back was signaling how far back I should come, and the fifth guy was signaling where he wanted me positioned (side-to-side) in the site!!!
Finally, they were happy with where I was and were preparing to walk away when the side-to-side guy decided I was too close to one side. They all shuffled around and got ready to do it again.
Sandy finally asked one of them what they wanted (where they really wanted me). They told her I need to move over (sideways) about a foot. She said if they would get out of her way, she would move me. She did, I moved, and all was good.
